Verdict is put off in Rolex robbery case

JUDGES have postponed a verdict in a major robbery trial, in which 12 men have been accused of stealing approximately 80 Rolex watches.

The High Criminal Court was suppose to hand out a ruling yesterday, but adjourned the trial until August 10.

The incident happened at Bahrain City Centre last September and two suspects, who are in custody, allegedly helped conceal and transport the stolen goods out of the country.

Both men, American and Turkish citizens, earlier pleaded not guilty.

Six other suspects – two Albanians, two Kosovans, a Serbian and a Macedonian – are said to have fled the country just two hours after the hiest along with four other men.

They dressed up as Arab women in abayas and hijabs before breaking into the Rolex shop, attacking a Pakistani security guard and planting fake bombs to aid their escape.

Police arrested the American and Turk on October 1 following a raid on their Manama apartment, from where officers allegedly confiscated some of the watches.

At least four suspects have also been arrested overseas with help from Interpol.
