Street cleaner killed in yet another accident

A STREET cleaner was killed yesterday morning when he was run over by a car.

Bangladeshi Mohsin Abdulhamid was cleaning the Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Highway near Alba roundabout when he was hit by a Bahraini man driving a Toyota Corolla at around 7.30am.

The 44-year-old, who worked for Sphinx Services since 2009, died on the spot and the driver was taken into police custody pending an investigation.

He has become the eighth person to have died on Bahrain’s roads in the last two weeks.

The GDN earlier reported that someone died on Bahrain’s roads once every four days last year, with an accident reported every six minutes on average.

The latest statistics from the General Directorate of Traffic showed that a total of 95,965 accidents were reported last year, in which 86 people were killed and 1,627 injured. Of the fatalities, 43 were drivers, 16 passengers, and 27 were pedestrians.
