A NEW specialised hospital for drugs and alcohol addiction will be built in Bahrain.

The Cabinet, yesterday approved a parliamentary proposal and directed the Health Ministry to take necessary action.

However, it is unclear whether the Al Moayyed Unit for Addiction at the Psychiatric Hospital will remain open.

MPs have been complaining about the lack of beds at the unit which causes addicts to be released before completing rehabilitation programmes.

“The idea for a specialised hospital has been with us for a very long time, even before MPs suggested it, as we are looking to expand treatment services for addicts especially youths,” said Minister of State for Information Affairs and official government spokeswoman Sameera Rajab.

“The new hospital will help us expand the range of services provided and ensure that better treatment is provided.”

Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved three other proposals presented by parliament. They were:

Allocating beds for mothers who accompany their diabetic children at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC)

Establishing a physiotherapy unit in Hamad Kanoo Health Centre in East Riffa

Constructing a building for Al Buhair Youth Centre in the Central Governorate’s constituency seven
