Social media helps trace grandfather

A BAHRAINI grandfather who was missing for more than 24 hours has been found following a social media campaign.

Salman Mohammed, 81, disappeared from his home in Gudaibiya on Thursday when his family believed he went out for a walk.

However, when he did not return two hours later they launched a manhunt for him in Manama, which sparked an appeal on social media.

He was found unconscious near a restaurant on Exhibition Avenue the following night by a Bahraini woman, who recognised him from pictures circulated on Facebook and Twitter.

He was immediately taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex, where doctors treated him for exhaustion and dehydration.

The father-of-five, who was discharged yesterday, has no recollection of what happened during the hours he went missing, according to his son Yassir Salman Mohammed.

‘We are so happy that he has been found,’ he told the GDN.

‘The whole family including our cousins, who work in the police, were looking for him.

‘He went missing in the evening at around 5pm and just didn’t come back.

‘He has gone off before twice but he always came back on his own.

‘When he didn’t come back we all got so worried and called the hospitals, police and then posted it on Facebook and Twitter.

‘We don’t know where he was going or what he was doing and he cannot remember the whole thing.’

He said hundreds of people contacted the family following the social media appeal.

‘The doctors checked him and kept him overnight to make sure he was fine and now, thank God, he is at home safe and sound with me,’ he added.

‘It never happened like this before, but now I think I will discuss it with the rest of the family to try to get him a nurse.

‘I don’t want anything like this to happen again.

‘I am just so happy with all the people who helped.

‘We got hundreds of calls, non-stop once we posted it on Facebook, asking where he was last and where he usually likes to go.

‘I am praising God for everyone’s help, may God bless them all.

‘The person who found him was a Bahraini woman ‘“ I didn’t speak to her but my brother did and he thanked her from our hearts for helping our father.’
