MANAMA: Police will be out in force tonight across Bahrain as the world welcomes in the New Year.

Fixed and mounted patrols will be deployed on major highways and avenues that are likely to witness traffic congestion as revellers head to Manama to celebrate.

“Exhibition, Osama bin Zaid and Awal avenues will be under intensive police surveillance, along with Al Fateh Highway,” said Traffic director-general Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa. Traffic would be diverted whenever necessary.

The contingency plan will also focus on other traffic hotspots, including Riffa roundabout, Riffa and Sakhir highways and areas surrounding Boukawara and Al Bar in the Southern Governorate. Police patrolling will be stepped up on avenues 28 and 29 in Muharraq to avert bottlenecks.

Officers will be working extra hours at traffic accidents departments at police stations in Umm Al Hassam and near the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

General Shaikh Nasser cautioned against speeding and traffic light violations.
