Thomas Glattus Soosai’s body was accompanied by his brother Keesmash Suthan, said Indian Embassy first secretary Ram Singh.

He will be buried today in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu.

More than 300 Indian fishermen attended a prayer service in memory of the 47-year-old yesterday at the Sacred Heart Church, Manama.

“Mr Soosai’s family has no-one to support them and we are trying to get some financial help,” said social worker Franklin Antony Rayan.

“The Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam has agreed to help, while we plan to approach other associations as well.”

The Indian Embassy paid for the repatriation of Mr Soosai’s body, since he had no legal contract with his employer.

The married father-of-three was shot by masked gunmen who boarded the Bahraini dhow Mesouth he was captaining last Thursday.

Six other Indian crew members, who were ordered below deck at gunpoint while the pirates stripped the vessel of valuables, sounded the alarm once they left.

The dhow was boarded 10 nautical miles northwest of Bahrain’s sea border. The surviving crew members managed to sail back into Bahrain waters, where they were met by the Coastguard six nautical miles east of Shaikh Khalifa Port.
