Online visas planned for GCC nationals travelling to India

BAHRAINIS travelling to India could soon get visas online under a new system that is being rolled out.

Indian Ambassador Dr Mohan Kumar said the Indian government was in the process of introducing e-visas for GCC nationals.

However, he said a timeframe for the implementation has still not been decided.

ÒGCC nationals will soon be able to get e-visas from the comfort of their homes with the introduction of a new electronic system, which is currently in process,Ó he told the GDN.

ÒThe Indian government has not yet announced dates of when it will be implemented as related matters get addressed.

ÒBut it will be for a month that could be extended by double the period (two months).Ó

He was speaking during the monthly Open House at the embassy in Adliya yesterday.

Embassy first-secretary for labour and community welfare Ram Singh said the new system will help people as they no longer have to wait in queues at the embassy.

ÒThe new system will see all details filled online and there will be a tracking number before the visa gets issued within a maximum of three days without the need to come to the embassy,Ó he explained.

ÒThose wishing to get their visas from the embassy will also be able to do so and we will issue it within a day, but the new system is there to help those who want to do things from their homes or offices.Ó

Mr Singh revealed that up to 45 Bahrainis get visas to travel to India monthly.

ÒWe see an increase of up to 20 per cent during the summer months as Bahraini families travel to different regions in India,Ó he said.

ÒYes, India is popular amongst Bahrainis as a tourist destination and here at the embassy we try to help them as much as possible with consular and tourist assistance.Ó

Meanwhile, he said six nationals visited the embassy yesterday with various labour complaints.

ÒTwo of the six cases complained that their sponsorships have not been cancelled by their employers and that they are unable to travel,Ó he added.

ÒThe other four are facing trouble getting their passports from their employers.Ó
