A MOTHER has been sentenced to two years in jail for abandoning her three-month-old child son outside a mosque in Busaiteen.

The Bahraini, in her 20s, left the baby boy wrapped in a cloth outside the mosque in March last year.

She became pregnant after having sex out of wedlock with a BDF officer, she told prosecutors, adding that the father suggested she leave the baby at a mosque so that their relationship was not exposed.

The Lower Criminal Court convicted her of endangering a child under the age of seven last week, but she has lodged an appeal against the sentence at the High Criminal Appeals Court and was released on BD200 bail pending the outcome.

She appeared in court yesterday requesting that she be allowed to take her son, who is currently in the care of social services.

The BDF officer is currently standing trial in a military court.
