A BAHRAINI mother and her teenage son had to be rescued from the second floor of their Hamad Town house after fire ripped through it yesterday.

Nazha Ahmed, 34, and Ahmed Sayed Hadi, 18, both became trapped after a suspected short circuit set the ground floor of the house ablaze at around 12.30pm.

Two fire engines and eight firemen were scrambled to rescue the mother and son, who had to be lowered from a second storey window due to the intense heat on the ground floor.

Both were taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

Ms Ahmed’s husband Sayed Hadi, who was at work at the Labour Ministry at the time, told the GDN that he learned of the fire from a neighbour.

‘I was out at work when a neighbour called and told me about the fire in my house,’ he said.

‘I came home, but my wife and son had already been taken to hospital.

‘Thankfully my youngest son, who is 12 years old, was in school at that time.’

Mr Hadi said that his neighbours came to help, but could not enter the house because of the thick smoke.

‘Everyone could see thick, black smoke reaching the sky,’ he said.

‘Firemen came and rescued my wife and son.

‘I thank God for saving their lives and I am grateful to see them alive.’

Civil Defence sources confirmed that an investigation had been launched to find the cause of the fire.

‘The Civil Defence operations room was alerted about the fire by a passer-by who saw smoke coming out of the house,’ said the source.

‘A team was immediately dispatched, who managed to rescue two individuals trapped inside the house.

‘On arrival there was a lot of smoke pouring out of the property and two individuals were still inside the building.

‘The rescue team forced open the main door but were unable to enter because of smoke.

‘Firemen used a ladder to rescue both of them and three hoses were used to put out the fire.’

Ms Ahmed and her son were said to be in a stable condition, the sources added.
