Monkey is spotted in Manama

MONKEY has been spotted living wild in Manama.

The animal, thought to be a baboon, was pictured at around 7.30am yesterday scavenging for food near Bab Al Bahrain.

It was rummaging through rubbish bags when British resident Mike Folkard photographed it and contacted the GDN.

‘I was driving to work in Manama and saw through the car’s rear view mirror something crawl,’ said Mr Folkard, 32.

‘At first I thought it was a cat but then when I looked closely it was a monkey moving freely in Manama.

Mr Folkard said he got out of the car and saw the monkey search for food in trash and decided to take a picture so that he could notify authorities.

The Bahrain Society for the Protection of Animals has been alerted and now plans to rescue the monkey and transfer it to its shelter.

‘No one should approach it as it could attack,’ warned chairman Mahmood Faraj.

‘We have asked authorities to co-operate with us and help us catch it.

‘At least if they spot the animal, they can call us and we can send our professionals to deal with it.

‘We can bring the monkey to our centre, where it will get food and shelter, in addition to care.’
