Mall closed as rain damages roof

ONE of Bahrain’s biggest shopping malls had to close yesterday after heavy downpours ripped a hole in part of its roof.

Strong winds battered Bahrain Mall’s central canopy on Tuesday night, which covers the main entrance, causing it to rip.

The canopy was already weakened because firemen were forced to cut a hole in it to allow smoke to escape following a fire on October 27.

Mall officials fear the complex could remain shut today if torrential rains do not stop.

The shutdown has also delayed the opening of a new store, twenty4.

Manager Michael Simmelink said the rest of the facility was not damaged, but the cost of lost trade could reach up to BD200,000 a day.

“The mall is closed because the canopy in the central court ripped,” he told the GDN.

“After the fire two-and-a-half weeks ago the fire department had to cut a hole in the canopy to let the smoke escape.

“The hole was repaired but the high speed wind that we have had ripped it apart.

“I would say about 15 per cent of the canopy is ripped.”

A new canopy has already been ordered, but it is expected to take three weeks to manufacture and another two to instal.

In the meantime, Mr Simmelink said a temporary cover will be set up.

“The Civil Defence said we needed to wait 48 hours while they monitor the weather,” he added.

“As it stands now the structure is safe but the water is the problem.

“The whole mall is fine except for the entrance, and we can’t have people just walking in and slipping.

“If the weather permits then the mall should be open today.”

He said cleaning crews will be onsite to constantly clear any waterlogging.

It was the second time in a month that the mall was forced to close.

Shoppers had to be evacuated on October 27 after a fire broke out in the storage room of women’s fashion boutique Promod, located on the first floor.

Another blaze broke out in the food court on September 13, and shoppers were evacuated.
