Major facelift for Malkiya fish market

A TRADITIONAL fish market in Malkiya is set to undergo a major revamp to include a state-of-the-art facility and new seafood restaurants.

The outdoor market, which was supposed to be turned into a public park seven years ago, does not have ventilation, air-conditioning or a proper sewage network.

Following several complaints from traders, the Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry has agreed to a BD300,000 revamp, which will include a two-storey market covering 1,000sqm.

“I am aware that the current marketplace is not properly done and that’s due to the fact that it was intended to be a public park seven years ago, but that doesn’t mean there is no potential for it to be something,” Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Minister Dr Juma Al Ka’abi told the GDN before the Cabinet resigned yesterday.

“Malkiya is one of the villages that is famous for the fishing industry and most of its residents are fishermen, on full time or part-time basis since it falls on the western coast.

“Traders want to have the marketplace covered and air-conditioning installed, but that’s something that should have been done years ago and the most logical thing now is to take the existing marketplace and turn it into a two-storey fish market.

“The original traders will sell in their usual place and on the second storey we will have seafood restaurants, in addition to aquatic pet stores.”

He said other traditional fish markets in Bahrain could undergo similar renovations.

“This concept is already being implemented in several European and South East Asian countries and will certainly turn Malkiya into a beautiful tourist destination,” he added.

“Budgeting for the project which would be at least BD300,000 will come from the ministry’s coffers that will be allocated in next year’s budget, unless investors come up with better bids.”

Northern Municipality director-general Yousif Al Ghatam said procedures to offer the project to investors were in place, but could change if the ministry secures funding.
