A CAMPAIGN to help a young girl, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, has been launched by the Pakistan Embassy.

Safa Raheel Lateef is 19 months old and has a condition known as phenylketonuria, which is a type of birth defect that causes the amino acid phenylalanine to build up inside the body.

Health complaints caused by the disorder have left her unable to sit, talk or walk ‘“ and she also suffers from epilepsy, which causes occasional fits.

Medication for Safa costs BD530 a month ‘“ or BD18 a tablet ‘“ a cost the family can ill afford, her mother Shabana Raheel told the GDN.

‘My husband works as a supervisor for a construction company and earns BD250 a month, out of which we pay BD120 rent for the flat,’ she said.

‘The balance is not enough for Safa’s treatment.

‘I have already sold the gold jewellery from my marriage for her medicine and now I have no money.

‘My daughter is so beautiful, I love her so much and I cannot leave her in this condition.’

Pakistan Embassy community welfare attaché Maqsood Qadir Shah said that he was personally following the case and has offered his embassy’s help.

‘We have started a campaign to help Safa, who is just too small to know about her condition,’ he said.

‘She is like a baby doll, but unfortunately she is a victim of this disorder that requires her to eat a very selective diet ‘“ and it is expensive.’

Phenylketonuria is caused by a mutation in a gene that helps create the enzyme needed to break down phenylalanine.

Found naturally in the milk of mammals, phenylalanine is used in the manufacture of food and drink products and is also sold as a nutritional supplement ‘“ but too much can cause a variety of health problems.

People with phenylketonuria need to follow a strict diet that limits the amount of phenylalanine, which is found mostly in foods that contain protein. For more information about the campaign to help Safa, or to donate, call 33145293 or 17244113.
