Taking a cab to and from work might be a convenient way for Dubai expats to travel around town, but the monthly cost for these rides is about to get higher.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Auhtority has announced that starting fares for Dubai taxis will increase from Dhs3 to Dhs5 from 1 December.
The basic charge for booking a cab will also be modified for non-peak hours from Dhs6 to Dhs8. Peak hour bookings will now cost Dhs12 instead of Dhs10 as a standard starting fare. Peak hour rates will apply to taxi rides from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, from Saturday to Wednesday, whereas Thursdays and Fridays have longer peak hour periods lasting from 4pm to midnight.

The increased rates will apply to all taxi franchises in Dubai, according to Dr. Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority.
