‘Drunk’ driver kills four students in Dubai

Dubai — Four students aged between 17 and 19 years were killed in a horrific accident involving three cars at Dubai International Academic City on Monday night.

The deceased students — from Palestine, US, Jordan and Lebanon had parked their car on the road shoulder to help another car stuck in a sandy area nearby when a vehicle being driven by an 18-yearold Emirati crashed into them.

Police officials suspect that the Emirati driver was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Five other people sustained moderate to serious injuries in the accident. The police were notified about the accident on Monday night at 11.23pm, following which the accident victims were rushed to Rashid Hospital by the Unified Ambulance Services.

According to Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, who visited the accident site, the Emirati driver was speeding when, due to a sudden swerve, he crashed into the two cars parked on the road shoulder. Such was the impact of the accident that the speeding car turned turtle and came to rest in the middle of the road. The four students died on the spot.

Al Mazeina said forensic and traffic accident experts from the General Department of Traffic rushed to the site and prepared a technical report. They took blood samples of the driver who caused the accident as they suspect that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander- in-Chief for Criminal Investigation, said prima facie it looks like the accident took place due to “speeding, negligence and not paying attention on the road”. The driver who caused the accident, he said, was engaged with “something else” while driving.

After the accident, the driver was in a state of shock, and received medical attention for minor injuries.

He has been referred to the Dubai Traffic Prosecution.
