Dancing to charity beat

SPECIAL dance classes will be held this weekend to raise funds for an animal shelter that could have its power and water shut off.

Tony Waters, owner of the Dogfather’s Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Saar, fears that the 400 animals under his care could die if the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) carries out its threat following a dispute over a BD2,000 unpaid bill.

His pleas for donations have been answered by Bollywood Steps, which will hold fundraising fitness and zumba classes tomorrow, from 10am to 11am, and on Saturday, from 6pm to 7pm.

Mr Waters said the centre’s power was due to be cut off this week, but has been delayed following an EWA investigation into the dispute.

“I wrote a letter to the EWA to tell them how I was being charged BD2,500 in April and BD1,100 in July and they agree that there is a fault in the meter,” he told the GDN yesterday.

“They haven’t said that they won’t cut off the utilities but they haven’t until now.

“I have already paid BD800 that I made in donations and still have about BD2,000 outstanding and I am trying to raise money to pay it.

“Bollywood Steps has been amazing and is actually setting up a dance class, charging BD5 per head which will all go to help me keep the animals safe.

“It has been so hot in the past couple of days, I don’t know what I would have done if the power went out and the animals didn’t have any air conditioning.”

Bollywood Steps, located in Ramli Mall, is closed on Fridays but will open for a few hours tomorrow for the fundraiser.

“Someone had to help and I always say if you do something well then you should use it to help others,” said founder and owner Juhi Sharma.

“I have been reading about the struggle he is going through and as an animal lover with a nine-year-old dog, rabbits, a cat and a whole house full of animals I thought this would be a good way to raise some money and awareness to help Tony and the animals.

“Usually our studios are closed on Fridays but we are even staying open to attract as many people as we can to help since Friday is everyone’s day off. And of course all proceeds will go to help the centre.”
