Country on high alert over virus outbreak

Bahrain is at its highest state of alert over a potential Mers Coronavirus outbreak.

The Health Ministry was yesterday put on high alert although Bahrain remains free of the deadly virus.

A taskforce in charge of combating a potential outbreak of the virus announced pre-emptive measures.

Health and Primary Care assistant under-secretary Dr Mariam Al Jalahma chaired the session which discussed developments of the disease in Bahrain, the region and the world.

The virus has already claimed the lives of 66 patients out of an overall 157 infected people.

A new circular would be sent to hospitals tipping staff on dealing with suspected cases.

The National Health Regulatory Authority will also supply an updated list of medication. It announced its preparedness in a statement to contain any potential outbreak.

Dr Al Jalahma also said that an urgent meeting would be held on Saturday.
