Construction work set to begin on new cathedral

A FOUNDATION stone blessing ceremony was held yesterday to mark the start of construction work on a new Catholic cathedral in Awali.

It was attended by religious leaders and members of the Catholic community in Bahrain.

The foundation stone was reportedly given as a gift by Pope Francis and brought especially from the Vatican in Rome.

A blessing was made following the ceremony at the Church of the Lady of Visitation in Awali.

Work on the BD11.3 million cathedral is expected to start in the coming months.

“Construction work is expected to soon start in the coming months,” said Bishop Camillo Ballin, who is the head of the Catholic church in Northern Arabia.

The church is set to be built on a 9,000sqm stretch of land donated by His Majesty King Hamad. It will also include an underground car park for 480 vehicles, a state-of-the-art pastoral centre and a dormitory.

The idea of building another Catholic cathedral in Bahrain was first proposed in 2011 when His Majesty visited the Vatican and Catholic leaders expressed their desire for a new church in the country.
