Bahraini student missing in India

A Bahraini student is missing in the flood-hit Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Hussain Mahdi Ebrahim last contacted his family in Bahrain on Saturday from a hotel in Srinagar city, after nearly 200 people have been killed in what has been described as the worst floods in six decades.

The Bahrain Embassy in India was alerted yesterday and Ambassador Tariq Mubarak bin Daina has pledged all efforts to find the 23-year-old.

Mr Ebrahim had travelled to Srinagar from Bangalore, where he is studying language, with his friend Adel Ali.

However, the embassy has not received any information on the other Bahraini.

‘They registered him missing with the embassy and told us that he was in Srinagar as a tourist, but lost touch with him afterwards,’ an embassy spokeswoman told the GDN. ‘We are trying our best to find the person and are in touch with Indian army and air force rescue teams.

‘We had contacted rescue teams in Srinagar but so far they could not get any news about him.

‘We are also liaising with the Bahrain Foreign Affairs Ministry to co-ordinate with Indian authorities in this regard.’

Mr Ebrahim’s sister-in-law, Fatima Ahmed, said the 23-year-old was trying to find flights back to Bahrain when he lost contact with his family on Saturday night.

‘The last message said that there were no flights and no Internet connection,’ she told the GDN.

‘He had gone to Srinagar for a trip from Bangalore along with his friend Adel Ali.

‘We do not know anything about Adel other than that he is Hussain’s friend.

‘They were in a hotel in Srinagar, but we don’t know which one or the address.

‘His telephone is now not reachable and he has not received the money that we sent to him on Friday.

‘We have informed the embassy and we are hoping that he is found soon.’

Mr Ebrahim, from Sanabis, travelled to India six months ago for English language classes after graduating with a degree in banking and finance in Bahrain.

Meanwhile, the embassy spokeswoman confirmed that a Bahraini couple, who were reported missing in Srinagar on Monday, were rescued yesterday.

‘Rescue teams found them in a hotel safe and they will soon fly back home,’ she added.

Emergency hotlines for Bahrainis in India are 0091-9560344455 or 00919582213131.
