Why is Mahyawa very expensive – more than petrol?!

    Mahyawa is a tangy fish sauce. I don’t know how its made but it looks like it might be dried fish (anchovies?) water, oil, sesame seeds and maybe some herbs all crushed together.

    It is usually sold at Iranian bread stores, in distinctive clear bottles, showing the brown colored sauce.

    It is originally from the southern coastal regions of Iran, but has become a popular food item in the Persian Gulf Arab states, brought by the migration of the Persian Huwala and Ajam communities to the region. It is typically served on top of khubz (Arabic flatbread).
    It is usually sold at Iranian bread stores, in distinctive clear bottles, showing the brown colored sauce.
