A THIEF who made off with a diamond necklace believed to be worth more than $1 million brought the Jewellery Arabia exhibition to a halt on Friday, it has emerged.

Visitors and exhibitors were forced to remain inside the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, Sanabis, for more than an hour from around 8pm after Lebanese jeweller Chatila realised it was missing from one of its display cabinets.

It is understood the thief, who is believed to be of Chinese origin, may have stolen the necklace up to three hours before it was discovered missing from the exhibitor’s display and sales area, in the corner of the Bahrain Jewellery Centre.

There were also unconfirmed reports that a ring, worth between BD45,000 and BD160,000 had been stolen.
